Trucking Insurance for New Operating Authority

Prepare for insurance and FMCSA filing conversations when activating new motor-carrier authority.

Start with a precise description of the operation

Insurance underwriting begins with what the business will actually do: where it will operate, what it will haul, which equipment it will use, and who will drive. A clear, consistent description helps avoid mismatches between an application, FMCSA registration, and the proposed policy.

Information commonly requested

Exact requirements vary by insurer and operation, but a business should be prepared to discuss its legal entity, USDOT and docket numbers, equipment, drivers, operating radius, cargo, contracts, and prior experience.

  • Legal and DBA names
  • Vehicle and driver details
  • Cargo and operating radius
  • Requested effective date
  • Available loss-history information

Allow time for filings

Policy issuance and filing submission are separate steps. For operating authority, the financial-responsibility provider submits the required form, and FMCSA does not grant the authority until required financial responsibility is on file. Do not begin non-exempt, for-hire interstate operations until FMCSA’s Licensing & Insurance system shows that the required authority has been issued.
