What operating authority represents
Federal operating authority is a registration for particular types of non-exempt, for-hire interstate operations. FMCSA issues different authority registrations for motor carriers, brokers, and freight forwarders, and an entity may need more than one authority for its planned operations. Read a displayed authority record together with the entity’s USDOT registration and current FMCSA Licensing & Insurance record.
Reading an authority record
A docket number commonly carries an MC, FF, or MX prefix. The authority type, status, effective date, and any revocation information describe different parts of the record. A historical grant does not by itself prove that authority is currently active.
- Check the exact legal entity and docket number.
- Review current status and effective dates.
- Treat reinstatement, revocation, and pending actions as distinct events.
Insurance and process-agent filings
For an operating-authority application, the appropriate financial-responsibility provider files required insurance or financial-responsibility forms on the applicant’s behalf.
