A USDOT number is the unique identifier FMCSA uses when collecting and monitoring an entity’s safety information. Federal USDOT-number requirements depend on factors including interstate commercial-vehicle operations, vehicle or passenger capacity, and certain hazardous-materials transportation; some states also require USDOT numbers for intrastate registrants. A USDOT number is not an insurance policy number or an operating-authority docket number.
A carrier’s public record may include identifying information, reported fleet size, operation classifications, cargo categories, and registration status. Availability varies by record and source.
USDOT number and operating authority are different
A USDOT registration and federal operating authority serve different purposes. Some operations may require both, while others may need a USDOT number without for-hire interstate authority. The carrier should use FMCSA’s official registration resources to determine its obligations.

How to check a number
Enter only the carrier’s USDOT number or a common prefix such as “USDOT.” Compare the returned legal name and location with the carrier you intend to verify. FMCSA notes that some mailed insurance and process-agent filings take several working days to appear in its Licensing & Insurance system, so verify time-sensitive details directly with FMCSA.
